Even if you are new to Islamic history, you must have heard about the Battle of Badr. It is one of the most important victories in Islamic history, as it marked the turning point for Muslims. You can imagine its significance from the fact that Allah (SWT) mentions it as ‘The Day of Distinction’ in the Holy Quran.
What does ‘The Day of Distinction’ imply?
The ‘distinctive’ element means that the battle distinguished between the ones with faith and the disbelievers. Moreover, it was the day that marked a clear victory of Muslims over the non-believers.
Led by Prophet Muhammad, the collision took place on the 17th day of Ramadan 2nd Hijri. After 13 years of persecution in Mecca, the Muslims defended themselves against the army of Quraish led by Abu Jahl.
How did the War Begin?
After years of hardship, the Muslims migrated to Madinah. The people of Quraysh seized their property and possessions.
Two years later, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) got to know about a wealthy caravan on its way to Sham. The caravan was passing by Madinah and was led by a Quraysh leader hostile to Muslims. Muslims saw it as a chance to reclaim their wealth.
Abu Sufyan, the leader of that caravan, sent a message to Abu Jahl. He planned to not only defend but to crush the Muslims. In the past, Muslims had not been permitted to retaliate. However, this changed after coming to Madinah.
Muslims were Outnumbered
Compared to the army of Abu Jahl—which had around 1000 soldiers—there were only 313 Muslim soldiers. The Qurayshite army was far better trained and well-equipped with armor. On the other hand, Muslims barely had anything.
Many people don’t know that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had detailed knowledge about the opponents. He was aware of their numbers, qualities, and shortcomings. This helped him secure a magnificent victory that is still remembered.
When the armies charged at each other, Muhammad (PBUH) took a handful of dust and blew it into the air. This formed a massive whirlwind that dispersed Abu Jahl’s army.
The Angels Descended to Help Muslims
Outnumbered and concerned about defeat, the Muslims held their ground, putting their faith in Allah SWT. Just when their strength seemed almost spent, an incredible miracle unfolded. Allah SWT sent down thousands of angels to join the fight, unseen by most but undeniably present.
These angels swept into the battlefield, striking fear into the hearts of the Quraysh. Against all odds, the Muslims emerged victorious.
Martyrs of the Muslim Army
14 companions from the Muslim army were martyred during the Battle of Badr. Today, their names have been carved at the site of Badr:

Aftermath of the War
Badr was marked by the fall of several Quraysh leaders, including Umayyah ibn Khalaf and Abu Jahl. However, the war prisoners were treated fairly. Most of them were allowed freedom for ransom money. The ones who couldn’t pay ransom were required to teach Muslims how to read and write.
Their victory at Badr marked a turning point in terms of strength and unity in the Muslims. Six years later, the Muslims returned to Mecca with humility and mercy. When they finally conquered Mecca, it was a peaceful win. By sparing their enemies, the Muslims forever altered the course of history.
